Abstract

The arithmetic of parenthood appears straightforward: If one child requires a substantial amount of time, money, and energy, then several children should require several times as much. Families, however, are not arithmetic problems. This paper examines the counterintuitive proposition that raising an only child may, in certain respects, be more demanding than raising several children. The argument is not that additional children reduce the absolute workload of parenting, nor that only children experience inferior developmental outcomes. Rather, the presence of siblings changes the organization of family life. Research suggests that siblings can provide repeated opportunities for companionship, conflict management, negotiation, imitation, and social learning. Larger households may also realize economies of scale because housing, meals, possessions, routines, parental knowledge, and other resources can be shared across family members. Meanwhile, parents typically accumulate experience as their families grow, potentially reducing the uncertainty associated with first-time parenting. Taken together, these mechanisms suggest a distinction between the number of children and the marginal difficulty of an additional child. A one-child household concentrates many parental resources on a single parent-child relationship, whereas a larger family distributes some social activity horizontally among siblings and develops routines designed for the group. Thus, although several children ordinarily require greater total resources than one, the difficulty of parenting need not increase proportionately with family size. The large family may be busier without being proportionately harder.

In Defense of More: Why Raising One Child May Be Harder Than Raising Several

Common sense seems to have settled the question before research begins. One child is difficult; therefore, two must be twice as difficult, four four times as difficult, and five an undertaking requiring approximately the logistical capabilities of a small airport.

The problem is that families do not scale like arithmetic.

Adding children unquestionably adds people to feed, dress, transport, educate, comfort, and occasionally retrieve from places they were specifically told not to climb. Yet it does not follow that every additional child produces an equivalent additional unit of parental difficulty. A household with five children is not five one-child households operating simultaneously. It is a different social system.

This distinction matters because contemporary conversations about family size frequently conceptualize children primarily as additional demands on parents. Such thinking captures real costs but overlooks an equally important phenomenon: Children eventually become participants in family life rather than merely recipients of parental labor. Siblings play together, argue together, imitate one another, teach one another, and develop relationships that exist independently of their parents. Meanwhile, parents reuse material resources, repeat established routines, and draw upon knowledge acquired through earlier parenting experiences.

The more defensible version of the claim that “one is harder than several,” therefore, is not that one child creates more total work than five. It is that the marginal difficulty of children can decline as a family grows because some of the work, relationships, knowledge, and resources of family life are shared.

The Only Child and the Full-Service Parent

An only child has an unusual structural position within a household: Every child-to-child interaction must occur outside the immediate family because there is no other child there.

This does not mean only children are necessarily lonely, selfish, or socially deficient. Such stereotypes have received considerably less empirical support than popular culture might suggest. However, the absence of siblings necessarily removes one readily available category of social relationship from everyday family life.

Kitzmann et al. (2002), for example, compared only children with children who had siblings and found that only children were comparable in the number and quality of close friendships. However, the researchers also found differences in peer-group functioning: Only children were less well-liked by classmates as a group and showed greater likelihood of both aggression and victimization. The authors suggested that sibling relationships may provide especially useful opportunities for practicing conflict management.

This is significant because sibling interaction requires little parental scheduling. Brothers and sisters encounter one another at breakfast, in bedrooms, in cars, on vacations, and while arguing over objects that neither child showed any interest in until the other one touched them.

The sibling relationship is therefore a kind of continuous social laboratory. Children must practice sharing space, negotiating competing preferences, recovering after arguments, waiting for attention, interpreting another child's emotions, and accepting that another person has an equally legitimate claim on family resources.

For the parent of an only child, equivalent social experiences can certainly be provided through school, friends, cousins, sports, neighborhoods, and other settings. But these relationships frequently require adult facilitation. Someone arranges the playdate. Someone drives to soccer practice. Someone organizes the birthday party.

A sibling, by contrast, is already in the minivan.

Thus, the large-family advantage is not that siblings eliminate parental responsibility. It is that they create a second axis of family relationships. In a one-child family, the central relationship involving the child is vertical: parent to child. In a larger family, horizontal relationships—child to child—proliferate.

Five children, for example, do not merely create five parent-child relationships. They create 10 possible sibling pairings in addition to those parent-child relationships. The social network of the household grows much faster than the number of children.

The Strange Efficiency of More

Larger families also illustrate an economic principle that initially sounds incompatible with children: economies of scale.

Some household costs are private and increase substantially with every child. Five children need more food than one child. They need more clothing, medical care, educational resources, and physical space.

Other household resources, however, are shared.

A bathtub does not have to be purchased separately for each child. Neither does a kitchen table, washing machine, collection of children's books, backyard, heating system, internet connection, or family Netflix subscription. A crib used by one baby can later be occupied by another. Clothes can be handed down. Toys migrate through age groups. A pot of pasta can become larger without requiring five separate cooking sessions.

Economists have long studied such household economies of scale. Deaton and Paxson (1998) described the theoretical importance of shared household public goods in understanding how resources function differently as household size increases. More recently, Casado et al. (2025) examined household size and food consumption using panel data, continuing the empirical investigation of economies of scale within families.

The important concept for parenting is not simply that “more children are cheaper.” They plainly are not free. Rather, the average cost of providing some goods and experiences can fall as more people share them.

The same logic applies to parental labor.

Preparing breakfast for five children is more work than preparing breakfast for one, but it is not necessarily five times the work. Driving four children to the same school does not require four times the gasoline of driving one there. Reading a bedtime story to three children simultaneously may require nearly the same 15 minutes as reading it to one.

Family size therefore creates an important distinction between total cost and cost per child.

A larger family costs more in total while potentially becoming more efficient per person.

The First Child Invents the Parents

There is another resource that later children inherit which cannot be purchased at a store: experienced parents.

The first child receives something extraordinary—parents who have never done this before.

First-time parents must learn an enormous amount while simultaneously caring for the person upon whom they are practicing. Feeding, sleeping, bathing, fevers, developmental milestones, discipline, childcare, schooling, travel, and family routines must all be encountered for the first time.

By later children, many of these questions are no longer novel.

The fifth child's fever may be medically identical to the first child's fever, but the parents experiencing it are not identical. They possess years of accumulated information and experience. They know which thermometer works, where the medicine is stored, when a symptom warrants medical attention, and which minor childhood calamities merely look catastrophic at 2:00 a.m.

This does not make later children effortless. Individual children differ dramatically in temperament, development, health, and needs. Research on birth order and parental investment also makes clear that parental time and resources can become diluted as additional children enter a family (Bu & Sulloway, 2016). That limitation is important: Larger families trade concentration for distribution.

But resource dilution has another side. Parents become unable to optimize every detail of every child's existence.

That may occasionally be a feature rather than a defect.

When Less Attention Means Less Management

One child permits an extraordinary degree of parental attention. Whether that attention is always necessary is a different question.

With one child, parents can monitor nearly everything: the child's meals, friendships, entertainment, schoolwork, activities, emotional state, and developmental progress. With five children, such intensive supervision becomes considerably more difficult.

Necessity forces triage.

The large-family parent must continually distinguish between problems requiring intervention and problems children can solve themselves. A disagreement between siblings, for example, does not necessarily require a judicial hearing chaired by Mom. Children can sometimes negotiate it themselves.

In this way, a larger family can shift the parental role from manager of one child's environment toward manager of a family system.

The difference is subtle but consequential.

The parent of one can ask, “What does my child want for dinner?”

The parent of five eventually learns to say, “Dinner is at six.”

One model individualizes family life around the child. The other requires the child to become a participant in a preexisting household structure.

Neither approach guarantees better outcomes. However, the latter can reduce the number of decisions parents make separately for every child. Bedtimes become routines. Chores become systems. Meals become communal. Expectations become family norms.

Paradoxically, having fewer options can make everyday parenting simpler.

Siblings as Teachers, Rivals, and Practice Humans

Siblings also occupy a developmental role parents cannot completely reproduce because siblings are not parents.

That distinction is precisely what makes them useful.

A parent may patiently explain the concept of sharing. A sibling provides the practical examination.

Sibling relationships contain affection and rivalry, cooperation and conflict. These interactions can be difficult, and sibling conflict should not be romanticized. Yet developmental value can arise precisely because the relationship is not frictionless.

Kitzmann et al. (2002) proposed that sibling interaction may provide opportunities for children to develop conflict-management abilities that transfer into peer relationships. Research comparing only children and children with siblings does not support simplistic claims that only children lack social competence; indeed, more recent research has found many differences to be small or statistically nonsignificant (Arora & Sharma, 2025). The scientifically responsible conclusion is therefore not that children need siblings to develop normally.

The narrower argument is more compelling: Siblings provide a distinctive and unusually frequent environment for practicing relationships.

They also provide models.

A younger child watches an older child tie shoes, use the bathroom, order at a restaurant, ride a bicycle, attend school, and interact with adults. The parent is no longer demonstrating childhood from an adult position; another child is demonstrating the next developmental step from close range.

Older children can likewise benefit from explaining, demonstrating, negotiating, and accommodating younger siblings.

There is an important ethical boundary here. Healthy family participation is not the same as “parentification,” in which a child assumes inappropriate adult caregiving responsibilities. Children should not become substitute parents simply because they have younger siblings.

But there is considerable territory between exploitation and helplessness.

An eight-year-old helping a four-year-old find a shoe is not necessarily being deprived of childhood. The eight-year-old may simply be learning that membership in a family involves contributing to people other than oneself.

The Mathematics of Attention

The strongest objection to larger families is straightforward: Parental resources are finite.

Time divided among five children cannot equal the concentrated time available to one child. Research on parental investment and birth order recognizes this resource constraint (Bu & Sulloway, 2016).

That fact should not be minimized.

However, it depends on an assumption worth examining: that parental attention is the only—or necessarily the optimal—form of attention available to a child.

A child in a large family may receive less exclusive parental attention while simultaneously receiving more sibling interaction. These forms of attention are not equivalent, and one cannot simply substitute for the other. Nevertheless, measuring a child's relational environment exclusively by minutes of parental attention risks ignoring the social resources produced by the family itself.

The relevant equation is therefore more complicated than:

More children = less attention per child.

A better conceptual model might be:

More children = less exclusive parental attention + more potential sibling interaction + greater shared experience + more complex family relationships.

Whether that trade is beneficial depends on the family.

But it is a trade, not merely a subtraction.

The Large Family as a Network

The most overlooked advantage of a large family may emerge only when childhood is viewed across an entire lifespan.

Parents eventually age. Children become adults. Sibling relationships can persist for decades after the period of intensive parental caregiving ends.

A family with several children therefore creates something an only-child family structurally cannot create internally: a sibling network.

Again, this is not a guarantee of intimacy. Siblings can become estranged, competitive, indifferent, or geographically distant. More siblings do not automatically produce better relationships.

Yet they create possibilities for relationships.

With five children, there are 10 unique sibling pairs:

5(4) / 2 = 10.

That arithmetic is more interesting than the conventional arithmetic of burden.

The popular calculation asks how many diapers, college bills, bedrooms, or car seats five children require. The network calculation asks how many relationships five children create.

The first grows approximately with the number of children.

The second grows combinatorially.

This observation helps explain why evaluating family size entirely through parental workload is incomplete. Children are expensive dependents at one stage of life, but they are also permanent additions to a family network. The infant requiring nighttime feeding may eventually become a 40-year-old brother, a 60-year-old sister, an aunt, an uncle, a caregiver, a confidant, or the person who still understands why everyone laughs when someone mentions Thanksgiving 2037.

The benefits of family size therefore unfold on a different timetable from many of its costs.

The Case Against the Case

A credible defense of larger families must acknowledge evidence that complicates it.

First, having more children increases total household expenses. Economies of scale reduce some per-person costs; they do not eliminate the cost of additional human beings.

Second, parental attention is finite. Larger families can experience resource dilution, and children with unusually intensive medical, developmental, or emotional needs can dramatically change the demands placed upon a household.

Third, siblings are not automatically beneficial. Sibling relationships can involve serious conflict, favoritism, aggression, or estrangement.

Fourth, research does not justify portraying only children as developmentally disadvantaged. Only children can have rich friendships, excellent social skills, strong family relationships, and highly successful lives. Findings such as those of Kitzmann et al. (2002) identify particular group differences, not a universal deficiency in children without siblings.

Finally, family size is confounded with socioeconomic status, parental education, culture, parental age, fertility intentions, health, and many other variables. Observational comparisons between small and large families therefore require caution.

These limitations do not destroy the argument. They refine it.

The proposition is not that every couple should have five children, that every only child needs a sibling, or that five children require fewer aggregate resources than one.

The proposition is that the relationship between family size and parenting difficulty is nonlinear.

Conclusion: More Is Different

The question “Is one child easier than five?” sounds almost absurd because the answer appears embedded in the numbers.

But counting children is not the same thing as measuring family complexity.

One child concentrates parental resources and responsibilities. Several children distribute those resources across a larger system while simultaneously creating new relationships, efficiencies, routines, and opportunities for independence. Siblings can become companions and social-learning partners. Material goods and household labor can be shared. Parents accumulate experience. Family routines become standardized. Children gradually become contributors to the household rather than remaining exclusively recipients of parental effort.

None of these effects makes five children literally less work than one.

They make five children less than five times the work.

That distinction is the heart of the case for more.

Modern discussions of fertility often imagine each additional child as another item placed into an already crowded parental backpack. But perhaps a family is better understood as a network. Adding another person increases its demands, but it also increases its connections.

The first child makes two adults into parents. Later children enter a household in which parenting knowledge, children's possessions, family rituals, expectations, routines, and—most importantly—other children already exist.

Perhaps that is why the arithmetic of the large family feels so strange from the outside.

Five is unquestionably more than one.

It simply does not follow that five is five times harder.
